About Surf Line Hawaii/Jams World
The man: Dave Rochlen
The year: 1963
The location: Hawaiian Islands
The inspiration: Founder Dave happened to see an article in Life Magazine, featuring the exotic Russian pajamas and robes donned by beachgoers at Black Sea resorts. Inspired to create his own colorful, surf-friendly swimwear line, he purchased some brightly printed fabric and asked his wife, Keanuenue, to help him make a short pajama with some modifications (no top, sewn up fly, and legs cut off at the knee).
Dave coined the term "Jams" as the name for his creation, short for pajamas - and Jams World was born. Soon all his surfing buddies wanted a pair. He quit his job as a systems analyst and began Surf Line Hawaii, Ltd., a surf shop on Kona Street in Honolulu, and his first pair of commercial Jams hit Makaha Beach in December 1964. Today, the iconic bold and colorful Jams World pieces are as popular as ever, especially in its home state of Hawai'i.
